Basic skills
In order to work effectively with stone it is necessary to have a knowledge of its properties, and to know how to use the available tools and machines correctly. In the basic course you will create a cubic form from a rough stone. This enables you to familiarize yourself with the basic working processes, and you will have opportunities of practising the relevant techniques.
Other focal points:
- The lifting and moving of heavy stones with simple tools
- The forging and hardening of your own punches and pitching tools
- The maintenance of tools and machinery
- Accident prevention
In the theory lessons you will learn more about the history of the stone’s origin, how the stone is extracted from the quarry, and the manual processing of the natural stone. This will be supported by written documentation.
When you visit the marble quarry at the foot of Pizzo Castello, you will discover traces of the historical development of quarrying this natural stone.
